  1. Subject–Verb Agreement (SVA)

Kesalahan yang sering muncul

  1. Salah karena subject it (singular) → verb harus depends, bukan “is depend”

Contoh
“It is depend on new technology.”
✅ It depends on new technology.

  1. Double verb: is + helps. Padahal subject cuma butuh 1 verb.

Contoh

“It is helps to back to normal for people health condition.”
✅ It helps people return to normal health condition.

  1. Penggunaan verb “are helps” (harus pilih salah satu: “are helping” / “help”).

Contoh

“New modern equipments are helps doctors is going to correct way.”
✅ New modern equipment helps doctors go the correct way.

  1. Salah tense: “are being supported” pasif, padahal maksudnya aktif

Contoh

“Modern technologies are being supported to find unburnable diseases very early.”
✅ Modern technologies help doctors find incurable diseases early.

Tips Simple Menghindari kesalahan Subject–Verb Agreement (SVA)

  1. Kalau subject tunggal → verb + s/es dan Kalau subject jamak → verb tanpa s
  2. Ingat aturan “1 subjek = 1 verb utama”. Kalau sudah ada is/are, verb berikutnya harus -ing (progressive) atau V3 (passive). Kalau tidak ada is/are, langsung pakai V1/Vs/es
  3. Hafalkan daftar uncountable nouns (equipment, advice, information, furniture, knowledge). Kalau benda abstrak/umum → biasanya uncountable → tidak bisa tambah -s.
  4. Setelah auxiliary (is, are, will, can, have, do) → verb harus:
    • V-ing (is helping)
    • V1 (will help, can help)
    • V3 (have helped, is helped)
  5. Kalau subjek = pelaku → pakai active. Kalau subjek = korban/yang dikenai → pakai passive.

2. Article Usage (a/an/the)

Kesalahan yang sering muncul

  1. Hilangnya article sebelum kata benda singular countable

Contoh

❌ Government should provide support for development of technology.

✅ Government should provide support for the development of technology.

Rule of Thumb
Semua singular countable noun WAJIB ada article/determiner (a, an, the, my, this, dll).

  1. Salah pilih article sebelum singular noun

Contoh

❌ He is an university student.

✅ He is a university student.

Rule of Thumb

  • A sebelum bunyi konsonan → a doctor, a book.
  • An sebelum bunyi vokal → an apple, an hour. (ingat: fokus ke bunyi, bukan huruf).
  1. Lupa pakai “the” untuk benda yang sudah jelas/spesifik

Contoh

❌ Doctors and nurses use technology in hospital to treat patients.

✅ Doctors and nurses use technology in the hospital to treat patients.

Rule of Thumb

  • Pakai the untuk hal yang sudah jelas/unik/spesifik.
  1. Menggunakan article di noun uncountable (overuse)

Contoh

❌ The information are very useful for patients.

✅ Information is very useful for patients.

Rule of Thumb

  • Uncountable noun (advice, money, information, knowledge, research, furniture) tidak pakai a/the kalau maknanya umum. Tapi, kalau spesifik seperti the information you gave me bisa pakai a/the.

Tips Simple Menghindari kesalahan Article Usage (a/an/the)

  1. Tanyakan pada diri sendiri sebelum menulis noun:
    • Apakah ini countable singular? Kalau iya maka kasih a/an/the.
  2. Kalau uncountable/plural biasanya tidak menggunakan article, kecuali sudah spesifik.
  3. Kalau benda unik (matahari, bulan, internet, dunia)  selalu ditambahkan the.
  4. Latihan: Ambil teks writing mu, kasih warna kuning untuk semua noun, lalu cek satu-satu apakah sudah ada article/determiner?

3. Word Form

Kesalahan yang sering muncul

  1. Salah bentuk adjective

contoh:

lower income

low-income.

Rule of Thumb: kalau ada 2 kata benda berjejer, biasanya yang pertama harus diubah jadi adjective form (contoh: health problem, bukan healthy problem).

  1. Salah pakai quantifier

❌ much categories

many categories.

Rule of Thumb: kalau bisa dihitung satuan (1, 2, 3), pakai many. Kalau nggak bisa dihitung, pakai much.

  1. Salah pilih word family

Contoh

❌ The teacher gives us a very help.

✅ The teacher gives us a lot of help. (seharusnya noun, bukan verb)

Rule of Thumb: cek subjek-kata kerja. Kalau setelah be (is/are/was) → pakai adjective, bukan adverb.

  1. Salah pakai amount/number → harus sesuai countable/uncountable noun.

contoh

❌ The amount of students in the class is increasing.

✅ The number of students in the class is increasing.

Rule of Thumb: kalau bisa dihitung jumlahnya → pakai number, kalau cuma bisa ditakar/timbang → pakai amount.

Tips Simple Menghindari kesalahan Word Form

  1. Baca ulang kalimat dan tanyakan: “ini benda bisa dihitung nggak?” kalau iya maka menggunakan many/number, kalau tidak maka menggunakan much/amount.
  2. Highlight kata sifat, cek apakah sudah bentuk adjective? (contoh: economy → economic → economical → pilih yang benar).
  3. Gunakan tabel word family waktu latihan. Misalnya: decide (verb), decision (noun), decisive (adj), decisively (adv).
  4. Bandingkan dengan contoh asli IELTS di Cambridge Books dan lihat bagaimana mereka memilih word form

4. Singular vs. Plural Noun

Kesalahan yang sering muncul

  1. Noun yang seharusnya plural ditulis dalam bentuk singular

Contoh

❌ Many child like playing in the park.

✅ Many children like playing in the park.

  1. Menggunakan plural padahal maknanya tunggal

contoh

❌ The informations you gave me are useful.

✅ The information you gave me is useful.

  1. Bingung antara bentuk regular plural (-s/es) dan irregular plural (children, people, data).

contoh

❌ The peoples in this country are very friendly.

✅ The people in this country are very friendly.

Tips Simple Menghindari kesalahan Singular vs. Plural Noun

  1. Lihat Kata Depan (Determiner)
  • a, an, each, every → selalu singular

Contoh: a student, each player, every university

  • many, few, several → selalu plural

Contoh: many students, few problems

After determiners, perhatikan bentuknya

  • a book ✅ / a books ❌
  • many students ✅ / much students ❌
  • much information ✅ / many informations ❌
  1. Kalau kata dasarnya gak bisa dihitung, jangan dibuat plural

sepeti information, advice, money, research tetap singular walaupun jumlahnya banyak.

✅ much information, a piece of advice

  1. Hati-hati dengan irregular plural

Jangan pakai “s” sembarangan.

  • Regular plural → tambah “-s” atau “-es”
  • book → books
  • class → classes
  • university → universities
  • Irregular plural (hafalin aja, gak bisa ditambah “-s”)
  • Child → children
  • person → people
  • man → men / woman → women
  • foot → feet
  • tooth → teeth
  • datum → data
  • Uncountable nouns (gak bisa plural)
  • information ❌ informations
  • advice ❌ advices
  • furniture ❌ furnitures
  • research ❌ researches (kecuali arti berbeda → scientific researches)
  1. Perhatikan Subject-Verb Agreement (SVA)
  • Singular noun → singular verb: The student is
  • Plural noun → plural verb: The students are
  1. Cek ulang akhir kalimatmu

Kalau ada kata yang terdengar aneh pakai “s” atau tidak, coba ucapkan dengan keras → biasanya langsung ketahuan salah.

5. Sentence Structure & Word Order

Kesalahan yang sering muncul

  1. Kalimat kepanjangan (run-on sentence)

contoh

“The rate of lower income individuals didn’t change significantly during the period, however most of the categories didn’t change much as well.”

ada dua klausa independen yang ditempel pakai koma (comma splice).

✅The rate of lower-income individuals didn’t change significantly during the period. However, most of the categories also remained relatively stable.

atau: …, but most of the categories…

  1.  Posisi kata sambung / connector yang kurang pas

contoh
“The bar chart, compares the amount of households in the US by their annual income over a given period.”
Salah karena koma setelah chart bikin kalimatnya salah struktur, subjek–predikatnya jadi putus.
The bar chart compares the number of households in the US according to their annual income over a given period.

  1.  Kata sifat vs. kata benda → posisi salah

contoh
“the rate of lower income individuals”
lower income lebih baik dijadikan compound adjective: lower-income individuals.
✅the rate of lower-income individuals

Rule of Thumb:

Adjective (sifat) selalu di depan noun. Kalau sifatnya gabungan, pakai hyphen.

  1.  Kurang konsistensi urutan ide (cohesion)

Kalimat kadang lompat-lompat tanpa transisi jelas.
Contoh: setelah membahas “lower income” langsung bilang “most categories didn’t change much” → transisinya kurang halus.

✅ Lebih baik → While the proportion of lower-income individuals remained almost the same, the majority of other income groups also showed little variation during the period.

Tips Simple Menghindari kesalahan Sentence Structure & Word Order

  1. Baca keras-keras setelah menulis, kalau terasa “napas kepanjangan”, berarti run-on.
  2. Pakai kalimat pendek dulu. IELTS lebih suka jelas daripada bertele-tele.
  3. Cek SVO, tanya: siapa subjeknya? apa verb-nya? ada objek/penjelas nggak?
  4. Highlight connector (however, therefore, moreover, in addition). Pastikan penempatannya bener.
  5. Gunakan Grammarly/AI check cepat hanya untuk spotting error, jangan full bergantung.
